The project started mainly due to this course called Thinking Archives. We had to explore the possibilities and intricacies and various meanings of what archives could be. Also a part of the course was participation in an ongoing project already underway at Srishti, of building the Srishti Historical Archives. It had a lot to do with archiving work done in Srishti as well as work done by faculty and students. A lot of the work was based in and around and about Bangalore, archiving the art documenting the city and its aspects. Another part of the course was a workshop on Cartography, working with metamaps and ultimately producing individual works mapping the various aspects of the city of Bangalore. Our project is one of the final works produced as the final product of the course. We call it Ethno Mapping.

The city is ever changing. And we wanted to look at the change through a specific perspective. We singled out a specific area: Avenue Road, one of the oldest parts of the city, and decided to map it using photographs that define the place through more than pictures of tarmac and road signs, but human elements, that characterises the place in particular as well as the city. We also look at this area through the perspective of an artist, Ms. Prabha, who comes from a traditional family of goldsmiths, a community who still inhabit a part of that stretch of the city and still work there, through her works, which is attempting to combine old goldsmith techniques with modern installation art practices.

project by : Ankhita, Malovika and Sunayana

The main objective of this workshop was mapping. We came up with individual ideas : malovika’s idea was to map the effect of brands on people using a questionnaire and according to the answers she decided to make an interactive quilt by incorporating LED lights in it, Ankhita’s project idea was about brand concentration in Bangalore and making a patchwork quilt using the map of bangalore, where as my idea was about mapping the primary colours using a sensor and converting the data into sound. Finally we decided to club all the three ideas into one and work as a group. Our final project proposal was about brands and their correlation with electro-magnetic waves. We are trying to map the concentration of brands in two most commercial places in Bangalore – Commercial Street and MG road; we are also mapping the electro-magnetic pollution caused by these brands which is generated by the illuminated sign boards and the use of electricity.

We started by going to these two places and photographing the brands existing in these places. To record the sound of the electromagnetic waves we created a sensor using copper wire which detects the waves, after this we went to commercial street and brigade road to record the electro-magnetic sounds using the device we made. We Were able to record some interesting sounds particularly from the generators, CFL lights, ATM machine and open wires. We also created brand patchwork maps and collage on a software called patchwork maker which would be finally transfered on to t-shirts.

This device was created very simply by just winding copper wire around a circular object to make a a large loop which is then attached to a chord . This chord can then be plugged into a sound recorder or a camera to record the sound of the waves. The copper wire detects the vibration which is converted to sound by the sound recorder

i pride myself on having good direction sense. Somewhere in my head routes i travel by become intuitive, and i often loose myself in thought while navigating to places that are routine to me. In a sense my movement becomes a rehearsed performance, and in another sense im sure this happens to everyone. But how do other people perform and move through the same spaces that i move through. what are their cues, their indications, their landmarks, their waypoints, and their means of marking?

using a sound recorder and a GPS locative device, i intend, to loose and find my way in a space, where all i have as indicators are other peoples directions.

for the purpose of the exhibition i would like to tag intersections/interactions (by sound/or drawing) on a map that are referred to as i walk and ask for directions, in an attempt to create a subjective map of the area that i am in.

as a preliminary test, i took a route i take every day – from college to home, by asking for directions. One of my initial ideas was to ask people to draw me route maps. today i want to drop myself off at a location i am entirely unfamiliar with and listen to how i should get back.

some readings ive done on navigation and location awareness devices.
